Hello Transition Community!
Today I caved and did something I've only done a few times over the last four years: I turned on my air conditioner. It's not particularly stifling according to the thermometer, but after 24 hours with a heat index in the mid-to-upper nineties, it was steamy inside my house. The six of us (including one 90-pound, long-haired dog) were starting to wilt.
October 10, 2010 is the "global work party" for global warming solutions. It is the latest move from our friends over at 350.org. And in my opinion Transition Initiatives (TI) are perfectly situated to take major action. Begin plans now to host a local project in your hometown, and have your TI be the hosting organization.
Why?
Firstly, #7 of the 12 Steps of Transition is physical projects. We TIs aren't "talk shops." We're about real action and real preparation. Finally 350.org has gotten around to real, physical, solution-oriented projects. Let's partner them and host local sites.
Our local Transition initiative in Los Angeles hosted a vigil this past weekend as part of the worldwide actions organized by 350.org These actions were coordinated to take place during the weekend midway through the Copenhagen climate talks. As a 350 organizer, I have been watching the news services and the 350.org site for mention of progress.
The photos from the weekend were breathtakingly beautiful.
7000 people registered their blogs and pledged to link their main topic to climate change - this is one of them.
Climate change says we should change
whereas peak oil says we will be forced to change.-- Rob Hopkins
Here in the U.S., the film "An Inconvenient Truth" made awesome strides in informing the general public about the reality of global warming. The April 2007 Step It Up campaign got people in 1,400 U.S. sites involved in activism. This month's 350.org campaign will advance public awareness in two ways: Firstly, the Oct 2009 350.org Day of Action is unfolding internationally, so it is an opportunity for citizens in non-U.S. countries to get involved, and secondly, it informs the general public about the target, the end goal.

The "12 Steps" (or "12 Guidelines") to Transition encourage us to form bridges to local government. But sometimes government drops opportunity right in our laps.
Last week, in response to a governor's order, California issued a "Climate Adaptation Strategy" in draft form for public comment. Catch that last part: for public comment. They're asking for our opinion on it. They want to hear from us.
ALL of us.
