Transition US is offering its second 4-day Train the Trainer course to teach the Launch training (formally Training for Transition) in the United States July 12 – 15th, 2012 in Chicago, IL.  The first one, offered in December 2008, was right at the beginning of the Transition Movement in this country.  Now, 3.5 years later we want to:

  • Expand the number of people delivering the 2-day Training for Transition workshop (now called “Launch”) particularly in geographic areas where there are currently no Transition Trainers;
  • Support the development and delivery of additional Transition courses;
  • Build bridges of collaboration with segments of the population not yet widely represented within the Transition Movement

In this course we want people who:

  1. Have personal, hands-on experience organizing a Transition initiative or Transition Working Group in their communities.
  2. Have a commitment to staying actively engaged in the Transition movement.
  3. Are passionate and clear about the Transition model and principles.
  4. Create and run high quality training.
  5. Explain concepts in clear and accessible language.
  6. Can work with emotional depth and hold participants to safely go beyond comfort zones.
  7. Have awareness of their individual journeys in personal development and awakening to the need for major social change.
  8. Are flexible, self motivated, collaborative, positive and have a sense of humour.
  9. Live in geographical areas in the US with no or few Transition Trainers.
  10. Represent a variety of viewpoints, cultures and backgrounds; additional languages would be an advantage.

Broadening and Deepening

The training works on two dimensions which we call roughly broadening and deepening. Broadening is about covering different topics, breadth of knowledge, and having a variety of styles and traditions available to deliver training.

The themes we cover in the initial training are very wide, and we don’t expect anyone to be an expert in them all. They include

  • Context issues – peak oil, climate change, carrying capacity, social justice;
  • Systems thinking – Permaculture, resilience, paradigm shift;
  • Groups and organisations – group dynamics, organisational structures, people skills; how to build a broad and inclusive movement.
  • Varied styles of group facilitation and understanding when to use them;
  • The stages of the Transition process – from awareness raising to forming working groups;
  • Detailed knowledge of the awareness raising stage, including planning and holding events, community engagement, forming partnerships
  • Visioning, why it’s important and how to do it;
  • Psychological models – the psychology of addiction, change, engagement. How to apply this to the Transition movement.
  • In the Talk Training, how to structure a presentation; good presentation skills; giving feedback. The ability to give clear, inspiring, and informative public talks.

Depth is about your own inner capacity for experiencing profound feelings – of sadness or fear as well as joy, creativity, connection. From this comes the ability to hold a group that is working at depth, and to design and facilitate exercises where participants feel safe enough to go outside their comfort zone.

Important: It is important to understand the nature of this evolving movement and the relationship of trainers to it.  Expect to catalyze the Transition Launch Trainings wherever you can.  The most successful Transition Trainers are those who give talks, provide interviews and get the word out.  If you want to work with a solid, established training organization where everything is static and worked out, think again before applying! We are all part of designing the structures and relationships as we go!

Also - Do not expect to earn a living doing this work, but do expect to be engaged in ongoing deepening and development of your training and transition practice.
