Years Active: 2010-Present

Current Activities: Transition Sarasota maintains two longstanding signature events: the Suncoast Gleaning Project and Eat Local Week. The Gleaning Project, initially organized by Don Hall, lines up volunteers for Monday morning harvesting of produce at a local organic farm in Sarasota. In eight years, the project has sent more than 275,000 pounds of fresh organic produce to the local food bank in Sarasota for redistribution to food insecure families throughout the area. Occasional gleaning at other growers supplements this core effort. Eat Local Week, now in its eighth year, is a collection of events during ten days in late October to showcase local growers and food businesses in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. Farm-to-table meals, films, tours, plant walks, and classes follow the first-day keynote presentation by a noted figure. The 2018 presenter will be Koreen Brennan, an expert and educator on permaculture. Occasional additional events such as tours of local farms augment these main projects.
