Current Status: Active
Year Founded: 2010
Summary of Activities: Since 2012, the ever-expanding Northfield Tool Lending Library has provided tools to Northfield residents. We supported the up and running Food Pantry in our town library, which is open every other Saturday. We have also held a Yearly Fix-It-Fair in the town elementary school with volunteer fixers and area residents to get bikes, lamps, and other items fixed. The Northfield Trails have been created and are available. We established NextDoor, a community listserve with nearly 700 members. A directory of “All Good Things Northfield” was created with Town Services, Land, Historical, and Recreation groups, from an event held by Transition Northfield in 2015. An archive of 2012 through 2016 for the Pioneer Valley Transition Towns Film Festival of locally-made films on "How Communities Are Working Toward Sustainable Living" is available to all at www.gctv.org/PVTTFF2016. Currently in development is another community gathering called "The Future of Northfield," based on an Open Space event.
Summary of Accomplishments: Born from Transition Northfield’s 2011 launch called “Celebrate Northfield,” with the theme for the day - "How can we as a community prepare for the uncertainties of the future?" - the assembled group of residents created 14 working groups from a Tool Lending Library, to a community listserve, and town water. This event launched our community on working toward sustainability and provided a model for our coming "The Future of Northfield" community event. The Northfield Tool Lending Library - the first in Massachusetts - has 220+ registered Northfielders with a growing inventory of over 200 tools in an enlarging space provided for free at the town Transfer Station by the Board of Health and run by volunteers. Open every Saturday during the warm months (and by appointment the rest of the year), it also includes a lending library of dishes, flatware, and table linens for large gatherings. The Tool Library has helped six other Tool Libraries get started by sharing legal documents.
