Summary of Activities: Sustainable Berea's primary goal is to support the development of a local food system. Our programs include (1) Berea Urban Farm -- a 1.4-acre educational market garden, (2) Harvesting Hope -- job skills training, based at the urban farm, for women who are recovering opioid addicts, (3) Berea Urban Agriculture District -- an inclusive neighborhood food system (if you eat, you're in), (4) Berea Victory Garden Blitz -- an annual spring event during which volunteers install more than 100 raised garden beds at minimal cost to low-income households, (5) Bee Friendly Berea -- supporting households in becoming beekeepers and in planting flowering plants for bees and other pollinators; and (6) Neighborhood Perennials Project -- supplying material support and education for the planting and care of fruit trees and bushes throughout the city.
Summary of Accomplishments: The transformation of 1.4 acres of degraded urban land into a beautiful and vibrant educational market garden is certainly our most visible accomplishment. The Berea Urban Farm hosts a large variety of workshops and hundreds of visitors each year to tour an integrated farming operation that includes two high tunnels, a heated greenhouse, washing and cold storage facility, production beds with drip irrigation, apiary and orchard. Our annual Victory Garden Blitz has also had a major impact through the installation throughout the city of more than 700 raised garden beds, mostly for low-income households.
