Transition Howard County
Current Status: Active
Year Founded: 2012
Summary of Activities: Transition Howard County focuses on many aspects of creating sustainable and thriving communities in Howard County, Maryland. We have Repair Cafes where our volunteers try to fix a variety of items for free including clothing, jewelry, bicycles, toasters, vacuum cleaners, and lamps. We are developing a Maryland Fibershed to enable the creation of clothes and other textiles from regionally grown fibers, natural dyes, and local talent. We encourage sustainable, biodiverse gardening and landscaping through our "Easy Gardening" workshops. We host "Green Gatherings" that are socials where people who are interested in sustainability can get together and socialize in a fun environment. We partner with numerous local organizations including the Columbia Community Exchange, Howard County Recreation and Parks, the Local Health Improvement Coalition (LHIC), the Mid-Atlantic States Transitioners (MAST), Earth Forum, Howard Community College, Master Gardeners, Watershed Stewards Academy, HoCo Climate Action, Columbia Families in Nature, and the Howard County Library System.
Summary of Accomplishments: Other accomplishments in addition to our current activities include discussion groups on "Your Money or Your Life" and Transition Streets; planning and promoting the Green Homes Now tour: numerous movie screenings on topics from food to waste; visits to local farms and gardens; Howard County's first BioBlitz; and educational forums on Community Health, Healthy Eating, Changing Landscapes, and Health and Climate Change.
