Hooked on Growth: Our Misguided Quest for Prosperity

Transition US leaders in the San Francisco Bay Area were recently interviewed for a film that plans to feature Transition as an alternative to our growth-addicted consumer culture. Filmmaker Dave Gardner interviewed Executive Director Carolyne Stayton and board members Trathen Heckman and Dave Room during a recent West Coast shoot for his documentary, Hooked on Growth: Our Misguided Quest for Prosperity.

Trathen (photo below) showed the filmmaker around the permaculture demonstration garden in Petaluma while highlighting the support and participation of local governments in Transition activities. Carolyne provided a primer on Transition, and Dave Room took the crew to a rooftop garden in downtown Oakland where he demonstrated some of his performance work about Transition culture. Gardner is also filming reskilling activities with the help of Transition communities in his home state of Colorado.

Jon Symes of the Pachamama Alliance was also interviewed while the two-man crew was in the Bay Area. Prior to our interviews, the film crew was in Vancouver to capture the first de-growth conference in North America. In Vancouver Gardner also interviewed William Rees, who – along with Mathis Wackernagel – developed the concept of ecological footprint analysis.

Gardner hopes that by highlighting the mythology and cultural programming that keeps society anchored in a “culture of growth,” Hooked on Growth will take some power away from the myth and help move us toward a “culture of sustainability.” Hooked on Growth is a non-profit, feature-length documentary to be released early in 2011. The project is crowd-funded, crowd-produced and crowd-distributed. Those interested in pitching in or arranging screenings can check out the project and join its grass roots support network at www.growthbusters.org.
