June Round-up of What's Happening in the World of Transition - US Edition

Building on the monthly "Roundup of What's Happening in the World of Transiton" pulled together by Helen and Rob over at Transition Culture, here are some highlights of what's keeping Transition Initiatives busy across the US...

In Vermont, Transition Vermont EDAP Planning Committee continue to meet - check out their group for details. Also in VT, Transition Town Montpelier organized a Village-building Convergence June 10-21st, 2011, with over 30 workshops and panel discussions. To fundraise for the event, they put on 'The Mad Pie Hoedown Fundraiser' where they raised over $600 for the VbC (photo to the left)! And, a new group, Franklin County Transition Initiative, is kicking off this month! Check out their group here

In OklahomaTransition OKC is organizing Oklahoma's first full 72hour Permaculture Design Certificate which will run August to November.

In PennsylvaniaTransition Town Media's TimeBank Initiative had their first members meeting and potluck - mosey over to their website for great information on what a TimeBank is, how it works, and how it benefits the community

In FloridaTransition Sarasota's Suncoast Gleaning Project members did an end of the season gleaning at King Family Farm and Market for Manatee Food Bank.

In California, Transition Albany held their Great Unleashing! Here's are two recaps from Kentaro Toyamo and Catherine Sutton, founder of Transition Albany two years ago. "If the goal was to create a memorable event that was the beginning of something community-driven to build resilience, I think we achieved it. A strong, self-led food group is evolving, as well as various other small groups – around a Time Bank and Herbal First Aid, for instance. More will follow," writes Catherine. Way to go!

Transition Los Angeles hosted Nicole Foss (Stoneleigh) for a discussion on peak oil and the financial crisis. Read Joanne Poyourow's reflections after the event (complete with recommendations for other groups who plan on hosting Nicole Foss!) on the TUS blog. They'll be holding a special gathering with a discussion circle focusing on 'What we can do' - moving from despair to action, collectively - July 17th.

Transition Sebastopol's Ready for Anything Working Group, including our very own TUS Execurite Director Carolyne Stayton, will be hosting an evening to explore the questions of how to go about getting prepared for the short and the long emergency, what others are doing to be ready for anything, and what things can be done to prepare yourself, your family and your community.

In Oregon, Transition PDX Emergency Preparedness group is meeting to review their application for a grant from the Portland Office of Emergency Management grant. The grant would be to bring expand an existing emergency preparedness pilot program to 20 new neighborhoods. We wish them luck!

In Michigan, Transition Ann Arbor is teaming up again with their local Steiner High School for the Ann Arbor Summer ReSkilling Festival, Saturday, July 16th, 2011, and are again seeking enthusiastic volunteer presenters to share their low-energy skills. Meanwhile, Transition Van Buren-Allegan is getting set for 350.org's Moving Planet day on September 24th, 2011.

In Illinois, Transition Trainers Bill and Becky Wilson had a great Training for Transition (T4T) session with organizers of Transition Chicago, and from the sounds of it, both the trainers and the participants had a stellar time..."Inspiring stories, collective wisdom, helpful, diverse backgrounds, talents and perspectives doing what we love..."that" is what it's all about- unleashing the genius from simply coming together."
