Transition Montpelier State House Garden Project

At the January Transition Town Montpelier open space meeting, a small group of participants decided that they wanted to plant a vegetable garden on the State House grounds. Thursday, May 14, at 3:30 pm, was the official, ceremonial planting. The media were invited, as well as schoolchildren and various dignitaries.

This week we're meeting with the local US Forest Service to take our next step in preparing a grant that will enable the community to explore potential local uses for woody biomass here. Currently biomass from the National Forest that surrounds us on all sides is either burned or trucked out of the area. We see many potential uses for this resource right here, including manufacture of wood pellets and brickets that are now being shipped in from out of state.
